In the winter of 2009-2010 AFCECO established its first in-house medical clinic. Centrally located at Mehan orphanage within walking distance to its four other Kabul orphanages, this clinic serves many vital purposes. The cost of medical care in Afghanistan is exorbitant, and of course there is no such program as medical insurance. With so many children to care for, every time we observed even the smallest symptom we had no choice but to make the often troublesome, delayed drive to the hospital, where even to walk in the door with a tummy ache can cost hundreds of dollars. Now, AFCECO saves all that money and transportation cost by having its own resident physician, examination room and small pharmacy. Small injuries can be addressed as well as diagnosing illnesses. Regular examinations can be scheduled as well as the dispensation of medications and inoculations. What is more, health classes have been held for a half dozen of our older girls and boys, now on their way to becoming certified physician’s assistants. These budding health care practitioners then administer basic first aide within their respective orphanages, as well as broadcasting preventative measures to the other children. The value of just one clinic is immeasurable, while plans are in the works to establish a clinic for Jalalabad and Herat orphanages, and to expand the size of the Kabul clinic.
