Drama has played a part in raising awareness of the plight of people throughout the ages, and Afghanistan is now home to an official youth drama troupe. Officially calling themselves the Ravenclan Players, 22 orphans aged ten to sixteen have been gradually honing their acting skills for two years. It began with short skits about common household conflicts. Later the children performed a one-act version of the famous treatise on war by playwright Bertolt Brecht, Mother Courage and Her Children. Most recently they performed an Afghan version of the Greek tragedian Aechylus’ Prometheus Bound. The benefits of such a program can hardly be counted. Teamwork, leadership, confidence, speech, movement and the bonding that occurs between the children have a direct link to future success in whatever profession they might pursue. Then there is the satisfaction that comes from delivering a message to an audience about a culture and a nation, and the worldliness fostered by studying renowned playwrights from across the world. If this continues on the trajectory that has been set, one day soon the AFCECO drama group will be performing for audiences across Afghanistan and beyond.
